Instruction
In MLA formatting, there's always a title, so this journal will be titled "Journal #1" in your paper.
For Journal #1, the focus will be on sentence structures---their crafting and the errors that may happen with them and in them.
*Print out a sample of your writing so you can analyze your sentence structures.
*Read the attached handout, "My Life's Sentences" by Jhumpa Lahiri. Lahiri is female, and is a fiction writer.
*Read the attached handout "Topic Sentences and Signposting" by Elizabeth Abrams
*Read pages 5-11 in Quick Access--"Ten Troublesome Mistakes Writers Make."
Refer to your previous writing samples so you can discuss your own sentences in Journal #1. Did you find any of the 10 troublesome mistakes in your own writing? Do all of your sentences follow the same pattern or do you recast sentences already? What do you need to work on? What's working well in your writing? How does your own experience with sentences compare with Lahiri's? Abrams' handout discusses ways to use topic sentences. Have you used topic sentences before?
Be thorough and specific as you discuss your writing. Say "I have trouble with run-on sentences" rather than "I have trouble with the second troublesome mistake."
Note that you must discuss the two articles--Lahiri and Abrams--in depth in the journal.
Use MLA formatting (see page 252 in Quick Access for a sample).
Minimum of 300 words in the interior of the journal
