Instruction
For this journal:
--Title this journal "Journal #2."
Using narrative writing form:
--Tell me what discipline (major) you are enrolled in and what documentation style that major requires its scholars to use. You may have to talk to professors in your major to find out what style is required. Locate the documentation style in Quick Access.
--Tell me who or what inspired you to choose this career path. Discuss your choice of major and career hopes.
--Tell me of at least three debateable issues that are occurring now or have occurred within your field in the past but are still issues. You will need to go into depth about why these are issues, how these issues might affect you in your career, etc. Make sure there are two sides to the issue. These issues should be the ones you are interested in spending at least 6 weeks researching.
Avoid the topics that have been overdone, such as abortion, euthanasia, global warming, etc. You are going to want to identify issues that you may encounter when you are working in that field. For example, a couple of semesters ago one of my students--an Elementary Ed major--researched burnout rates among K-12 teachers in America, and wrote her paper on what teachers should be doing to reduce the likelihood of career burnout (which at that time was at an alarming 85%). The burnout rate could be higher now than when she researched it, but I know two people (my student and I) who are now more aware of what to do to keep from burning ourselves out on the job. Her project was useful also to the other Education majors in our class.
I want the research project to be something that will be useful to you not only by going through the writing and research process, but also by giving you insight into issues that you might encounter in your career. Start now to investigate the issues that are being talked about in your discipline (major) as you complete this assignment.
