Instruction
For this essay, you will choose either Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John Watson, or Irene Adler, and you will evaluate that one character in a three page assessment paper.
Once you have chosen your character, you will need to write a brief biography of the character. What do we know about their past? What do we know about their family and friends? What do we know about their profession, training or education. DO NOT go to Wikipedia or any outside sources. Only use the book and stories we have covered so far for information.
Once you have told the reader some background information, identify the main qualities and characteristics the character has. What are their skills? What kind of personality do they have? How moral or ethical are they? Again, based only on what you have read so far and examples from that material, give the reader and idea of their unique abilities and aspects of their personality.
While I want you to stick to concrete facts and examples in the stories, you can slip in some of your own personal reactions to the characters as people. Are they likable? Interesting? Admirable? Amusing? You don't want to go too far down the road of just writing your paper on opinion, however. This paper mostly is a way to demonstrate what concrete things you have learned about one character from the reading so far.
Finally, I want you to briefly explain why you think this literary character has such fascination and interest for audiences at the time and still today. There are many characters who have been written over the years, but few of them have two television series and a movie franchise in 2017. Explain why you feel the characters are strong and interesting enough to hold the attention of audiences for so many years. You can mention the current versions of the character briefly, but the focus should be on why the book and story character has remained popular.
Even though Irene Adler was only in one story, we learn a great deal about her, some of it contradictory depending on who is talking about her. However, I wanted to provide a female character who is well known in the Sherlock Holmes canon, so I have included her. Obviously, writing about either Holmes or Watson allows you to draw on much more information. For them, you can use information from A Study in Scarlett, "A Scandal in Bohemia", and "The Speckled Band".
This paper will be due to Turnitin at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20. Your paper should be in MLA paper format. You do not need a Works Cited page, but you should identify which book or story you are referring to when you quote or refer to specific examples. (Watson reveals his sense of right and wrong clearly in A Study in Scarlet when he says,) You do not need parenthetical citations. You only need to mention which story or book you are referring to.
The essay should run around three pages. If you go a bit longer, do not worry, but it cannot be less than three pages and properly cover everything I've asked you to do.
