Study QuestionsPlease respond substantively in your Journal to as many questions below as you wish. Note:
There may be more here than needed to fulfill the length of the Journal assignment, so you may not need to
respond to every particular point. Be selective and write about the issues that most matter to you.
1. Is Carrs description of social media and its effects on human interaction accurate, or does he
exaggerate? Do you agree with his tone of panic that social media has radically altered the way we
interact? Or do you think that we are absorbing this technology and making adjustments to the new
reality? Does Carrs generation (he was born in 1956) and date this was written (2011) make a
difference? In other words, has all that much changed in six years?
2. Please reflect on your own social media use, not only on its impact on personal relationships, but in
terms of how it relates to the more formal academic and business writing you are asked to do at RMU.
Can you express yourself more fully on social media, or in more formal, longer forms of writing?
Does the audience matter in how you approach each? Do you ever read over, revise, reconsider your
emails, messages, and posts? What if you had to? Do you think you would be happy with how you
come across in certain instances years later, if select social media were preserved and taken out of
context?
3. Imagine the workplace you desire in your future. Do you think your current social media habits will
help or hinder your professional and career aspirations? Do you think the informal way you come
across will help in making you seem like a more approachable, friendly person? Or will it be
necessary to modify your social media style so as to come across as more competent and businesslike?
Do you think that social media will continue to transform ideas of professionalism in the workplace,
or will our social media habits have to grow up as society adapts to its new realities?
