You will write three analysis essays. These essays will be structured around the literary concepts we discuss in class. Some class time will be allotted for peer review, but you may also need to meet with a classmate outside of class or to visit the CTL. Each response essay should be 2-3 pages long in MLA format. (A page of academic text is 12pt Times New Roman or Arial font, double spaced, with one-inch margins all around.) Sacred scripture is text that provides an origin story, enumerates rules for living, and offers positive and negative examples of interaction with those rules; and every major world religion has a body of texts that it holds to be sacred. This semester, we have read excerpts from the Christian New Testament Gospels (pp 18-34) and from the Islamic Quran (pp. 71-98). Choose one of these texts, and write an essay that analyzes how it fulfills one of the three core functions of scripture (origin story, rules, and examples). Your essay should be 2-3 pages of academic prose in MLA format (described in the syllabus and modeled on this page). Dont forget to include a heading on page one, page numbers in the upper right corner, and a works cited entry at the end. Essay is due on Canvas before class on Friday 2/24. before 9:00am Paragraph 1 - Introduction: Identify the text you have chosen and give a brief overview of its context. Give any background information that is pertinent. Credit your textbook for any paraphrased info! Identify the function of scripture on which you will focus. Paragraph 2 Literary Analysis: Zoom in on the chapter, sura, or group of verses on which you will focus. This paragraph should include a properly cited quote or two. Analyze the message. How does this passage convey rules/examples? Does it speak directly to the reader? Does it use metaphor? Parable? Paragraph 3 - Evaluation: Consider the broader purpose of the passage you analyzed above. How does it contribute to the scripture as a whole? Is its message applicable only to members of that faith or can it be helpful to other people as well?
