  • This is the post you should leave a comment on: At the end of the first paragraph we are told about the horrible things that have happened to the mother in her lifetime before the events of this story, which plays a huge role on the relationship she has with her daughter. Being the only daughter, the mother puts an immense amount of pressure on the daughter to achieve her full potential, while the daughter just wants to be a kid and not be pushed into being great. This strains the relationship because the mother is aware of her daughter's potential but the daughter has no intention of fulfilling her mother's dream, which disappoints her mother. The comic relief in this story is very important because everything just continues to get worse and the humor helps to ease the repeated sadness the family goes through as the mother continues to be disappointed by her daughters actions. The irony of the story is that in the most memorable moment of the daughters piano career is symbolic to her childhood. She had to play a song called, "Pleading Child" which she was since she continuously begged not to have to play the piano. She discovers the next page with the song titled, "Perfectly Contended" and realizes that they were the same song. I think the mother giving her daughter the piano symbolizes the belief she had in her daughter to be great and that the mother will always believe in her. The significance of the title "Two Kinds" is a reference to the mother telling her daughter that there are two kinds of children and how the mother wanted an obedient child, but her daughter was reluctant to obey.
