Instruction
For Journal #5, we'll focus on punctuation issues involving commas and apostrophes because these are really common in student writing these days. This issue is important to focus on because it has implications for the workplace later on.
What I generally see is either a lack of comma or apostrophe use or a misuse of them. With commas, the problem mostly centers around students not using them after introductory phrases, so do pay attention to that aspect as you work through your essay. Apostrophes are quite often missing also, both in possessive case situations and in contractions.
Read QuickBox #47.1 on page 424 in Quick Access to learn about comma use, then go to the link in the box below this assignment and participate in an interactive exercise about commas. Work all ten sentences in the interactive exercise; record your score so you can include it in this week's journal report.
Next you'll focus on the apostrophe. Read pages 440-443 in Quick Access, then click on the link (Click on the words "Journal #5") and visit the Apostrophe Protection Society. You didn't know apostrophes were a protected species, did you?! Smile
Your last task for this journal is to examine your own writing closely for comma and apostrophe errors, and report your findings in this week's journal. You should discuss some aspect of the Apostrophe Protection Society website and the website about commas, then cite each with an in-text citation. You will also need a Works Cited page. Journals that do not employ the use of in-text citations and a Works Cited page will not receive a favorable grade. You need to practice using documentation, as that is part of the purpose for journals.
Please also provide some feedback about this assignment to let me know if it was helpful to you.
