Instruction
One of the major problems that occurs when studying aggression is how to define it. Most people seem to know what they mean by the term when they use it in a sentence. Yet, when they attempt to define aggression precisely, it becomes less clear. As an example, physical attacks by one individual against another are generally viewed as aggression unless the attacker is in a role in which such behavior is sanctioned (soldier, police officer). Professional football players are seen as aggressive, as are used car salesmen.
To highlight the problem of how aggression is defined in research we are going to participate in our own classroom study. We are going to look at different behaviors found in TV or video games and consider whether they constitute aggressive actions. For example, while watching the History Channel there might be a program about the history of guns. Would you consider a gun collector interviewed for the program to be an aggressive person? What about a married couple portrayed in Days of our Lives having an argument is this aggressive behavior?
Attempting to decide whether the actions you view on TV and in video games are examples of aggression can be challenging. And I anticipate it will result in a lively discussion this week.
Your Task:
Aggression is a part of everyone's experience and is the subject of this exercise. It is becoming a serious social problem in American society while the causes are not well understood. Through this discussion we will develop a heightened awareness of violence as a form of aggression and we will begin to think about its causes.
Post as a response to this thread your definition of aggression. What is it? What does it entail?
Watch 30 minutes to 1 hour of TV or watch someone playing video games. While you watch complete the following Aggression on Television or in Video Games: Data Sheet. (Copy the form below for easy printing.)
Post your findings from the Data Sheet, sharing with the class
The raw data.
Your thoughts on whether what you saw during your observation period fits your definition of aggression.
You thoughts on the role TV and video game playing has in the heightened aggression observed in society.
