Four page essay on one theme you find in Antigone. MLA format with citations from the play
Possible thematic concerns may be things like the following:
* Choice vs consequence or maybe the effects of going against tradition. How does the play examine either of these ideas and what does it have to say about them?
* Another possibility would be to examine the idea of hamartia in the play. Who has it and how does it affect that character? In this case you should choose just one character. To make it even easier on you, lets just give you a choice between Creon and Antigone.
* Finally, an examination of Creon and Antigone could suggest another theme. Both are stubbornly attached to their ways of thinking. Creon is stubbornly attached to the word of law rather than the spirit, and Antigone can see only her idea of respect for her family member, a brother. What problems arise from these dearly held positions by each character, and what does the outcome suggest as the theme?
* If you have something outside of these, let me know. You must run your idea by me if it is not related to the items on the list above.
Once you choose a concern to investigate in your essay, you must decide what the work has to say about it. This idea will form the basis of your thesis statement.
Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, how does the play say it? How does the play address the theme youve chosen? What rhetorical strategies does the play use in conveying its ideas to its readers? What metaphors, language, wordplay, etc. does the chosen work employ? Remember that whenever you make an argument about literature, you must also cite the text of it as well in order to make your point. Do not count on telling me what happens. Show it to me. Moreover, show me what happens only in order to make a point about it. When you show me some dialog, you must also interpret it within the context of your argument. Use the text to help you make your own case for what the poem or play has to say about your chosen social concern.
Remember that a successfully constructed essay will consist of a well-crafted, correctly formatted argument based on a successful and narrow thesis statement, body paragraphs that each address some aspect of the thesis statement, and a conclusion that wraps up your argument for your audience.
