Hi, The Annotated bibliography is due by 30 this month,
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT:
An annotated bibliography is a list of full (complete, correct) citations of at least 5 outside
scholarly sources you plan to use for your paper, followed by short descriptions of each source
and how you plan to use the source in your paper (these descriptions are called annotations).
Each annotation must show that you have read, understood, and thought about the source
enough to be able to explain: (1) the overall argument(s) of the author(s), (2) the relevance of
the source to your paper, and (3) how you will use the source in your paper. Each annotation
must include all three of these things. Annotations should be around 75-150 words for each

The((( purpose )))of this assignment is to: (1) research and evaluate possible solutions to a specific
problem/issue of your choosing related to school in African American life in the 21st century;
(2) construct and support an argument about the best possible solutions for your chosen
problem/issue; (3) demonstrate your library research skills by finding appropriate scholarly
sources and using them to support your argument; and (4) demonstrate your mastery of the
course material and ability to synthesize outside scholarly sources with course materials.
FINAL PAPER ASSIGNMENT:
For your final research paper, you must (1) select a specific problem/issue related to school in
the African American life in current times; (2) use outside (non-course material) scholarly
sources and course materials explore what solutions scholars have suggested to this problem;
and (3) make and support a clear argument about the best possible solution(s) based on your
analysis. Your final paper, as a whole, must answer the following questions, using scholarly
sources as support:
- What is an important problem/issue related to school in African American life today,
and why is it an important problem/issue?
- What do scholars who study this issue say is the cause of this problem and what
suggestions do they make to address/fix the problem?
- What do you argue is the best way to address/fix this problem and why?
You may also bring in non-scholarly ideas (e.g. ideas from teachers, administrators, students,
parents, community members, etc.) if you want to argue that the best possible solution is not
found in the scholarly literature, but the bulk of research paper must be an analysis of scholarly
sources. This is a formal, scholarly research paper, so it must be mostly a discussion and
analysis of scholarly sources. However, you may also bring in non-scholarly sources to
supplement *but not replace* scholarly sources. And any non-scholarly sources must be tied to/
put in conversation with the scholarly literature.
*Please note that scholarly sources include peer-reviewed academic journal articles and
academic books. Popular journals or newsites (e.g. New York Times; The Root; The Atlantic)
and websites (e.g. Wikipedia; U.S. Department of Education; etc.) are NOT scholarly sources,
even though they may be legitimate sources on information. See D2L for more details.
AUDIENCE:
Write as if for an audience of professional scholars. This should be formal academic writing,
with full explanations, supporting evidence, and proper citations. It should not include personal
or anecdotal evidence, only scholarly analysis and evidence.
Unlike on your Class Prep Assignments, grammar, syntax, and composition *will count* on this
assignment. Therefore, I highly recommend that you utilize the UWM Writing Center. You can
request a face-to-face meeting or an online tutoring session at the following URL:
http://uwm.edu/writing-center/
FORMAT:
Your final research paper must be typed in size-12 Calibri or Times New Roman font, double
spaced, and 6-8 pages in length (no shorter than 6 full pages, no longer than 8 full pages), with
standard (1) margins. Your Works Cited page (and a title page, if you chose to include one)
will *not* count toward the page length. The essay must be submitted via the D2L dropbox
entitled Final Paper as a Word document.
