Historical Artwork Analysis Art and other forms of cultural expression offer us a window into the lives and ideas of people from the past. By looking at historical art we have the opportunity to study what was important to people in a way that gives us a better understanding of how they lived. Art is all around us but unfortunately much of the most important art is located far away from Wilkes-Barre, PA. Luckily for us though, the internet has made much of this art accessible at the click of a mouse. For this assignment you will use the resources of the internet to search and browse fine pieces of art from the historical periods that we have been studying. How to complete the assignment: Go to Google: Cultural Institute (https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/home) and begin searching and browsing the vast collection of art that they have available. While you can use any of the features found at Google: Cultural Institute, I would recommend beginning with Art Project. Select Four pieces of art and/or artifacts that you believe connect to what we have studied in our course. These can be paintings, sculptures, advertisements, pottery, etc. Write a 3-5 page paper in which you discuss how these pieces of art reveal or reflect upon the major themes of our course taking into consideration questions such as: How do changes in artistic styles over time reflect the changing priorities and ideas of the cultures that produce them? How did the processes of trade and exchange bring together the people, goods and ideas represented in the artwork? General Tips Try to pick four objects that are thematically related (i.e. four pieces that represent European cultural and political ideals, four pieces from the Atlantic trading network or the Indian Ocean trading network, four pieces that represent ideas of slavery, etc.) as this will allow you to discuss how they relate to each other. Choose art or artifacts from a time and area that we have discussed in our course. Try to choose pieces from different time periods as this will allow you to discuss changes in artistic styles over a longer chronological period.

Art is used as an expression of one's self. During the previous decades, an art is also used to represent different things in the world. It is also should be the basis of one's country history. Many people defines art as a very broad area. Some people represents art in things like drawings, paintings, sculpture, pottery and many more. Over the time, the representation of art changes and innovates due to the technological advances that we are also experiencing. Nowadays, the arts could also be computerized through the use of different software like painting application, Picasa viewer, Adobe Photoshop, and many others.
One of the arts that I chose was the Still Life with a Boy Blowing Soap Bubbles. This art is painted in the year 1635 up to the year 1636. According to the Google Arts and Culture "The soap-bubbles painting shows an hourglass, a feathered cap, the skull, the gourd, and many more as a representation with hidden meaning. The subject showed in the art was the vanitas. It also shows the meaning of the man's existence and its quality. The vanitas imagery wants to inform the audience about the existence too of the religion which shows the wings of an angel in the said art.

The Still Life with a Boy Blowing Soap-Bubbles was made by the great painter Gerard Dou. His career started in the year 1635 until the year 1636. His paintings was consistently showed the compositional forms. Aside from this, he made paintings also about interior scenes which has a still life elements like floating against the dark. His artworks could be found on The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Japan. He has been known as the Dutch Golden Age painter and had been popular for his interior artworks and nice paintings as well.
The next painting that I would like to expound was the painting of Frederick Carl Frieseke. He was an American Impressionist painter. Most of his life were spent in France which is mostly an expatriate. Another thing about him is that he is a very influential person. He was famous in establishing paintings outdoors and indoors. Frederick Carl Frieseke was born on April 07, 1874 and died on August 24, 1939.
One of the paintings of Frederick Carl Frieseke is the Lady in Pink in the year 1902. It is a portrait of the student who posed for an artist friend. The painting was amazing because it shows a painting of a lady in pink with a harmony of white. When you will see the painting you will be encouraged to see the water colour design which is very fantastic. During this year, mostly of the paintings shows an old culture. It shows the elegance of a woman in the painting. Before, the woman was very conservative that is why the lady in the painting is wearing a long white and pink dress to show that the woman should be respected.
The next painting during the year 1880 up to the 1891 is a painting of Maternal Caress. This painting shows the love of the mother to her son. The painting was by Mary Cassatt. Mary Cassatt was an innovative printmaker. She was a prolific and her works are very influential. She made imitations on her prints like from the prints of Japan. The one that she did was the print of the mother and child image.
Another painting from the Google Arts and Culture was the very known The Starry Night. This art is a modern art made by Vincent Van Gogh in the year 1889. The art is posted on the Museum of the Modern Art. The painting shows a night sky which is a field of an energy. When you see the painting it is a very quiet in order and connects the stars into the sky. It is associated with the flame like which is always makes a dream. There are a shining of dots which shows the light of the moon and the stars.
The famous painting lets Van Gogh says that "Looking at the stars always makes me dream. I ask myself, I shouldnt the shining dots of the sky be as accessible as the black dots on the map of France? Just as we take the train to get to Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star" (Google Arts and Culture). This just means that Van Gogh made this painting because he wants to reach a star which is very impossible to reach since is not that accessible. To make it possible, he made a painting by himself showing that he can reach the star in the painting.
The Starry Night painting shows a morning star and the Venus which made it very appealing to the audiences. The audiences and the people got amazed with his artwork . It has a memory and imagination and the color scheme of the painting was fascinating. It is look like very cool into the eyes of the people. Van Gogh is known for being a great artist and for portraying a modern art which has a hidden meaning and a great imagination.
As the years goes by, I have found out that the art changes and became more artistic. In the current year, the modern art shows the tradition of the previous years. Before, the art and paintings was not that colorful. They are doing the paintings with a not so much color scheme like the Lady in Pink. The color scheme was just white and pink. Today, like the Starry Night painting, it uses different kinds of colors to emphasized the beauty of the art.
