Here are two other options for the Paper
1. Do a Review of the Literature
This assignment asks you to write a review of the literature of a question that interests you. The purpose of a literature review is to identify and put into categories the important work that has already been published on an issue or question.
Here is how Helen Mongan-Rallis, from the University of Minnesota Duluth, explains the difference between a review of the literature and an annotated bibliography:
A literature review isnotan annotated bibliography in which you summarize briefly each article that you have reviewed. While a summary of the what you have read is contained within the literature review, it goes well beyond merely summarizing professional literature. [A literature review] focuses on aspecifictopic of interest to you and includes acritical analysisof the relationship among different works, and relating this research to your work. It may be written as a stand-alone paper or to provide a theoretical framework and rationale for a research study (such as a thesis or dissertation).
In the case of this assignment, you may not yet be able to [relate] this research to your work, because you are at the beginning of thinking about what your academic interests are. For the purpose of this assignment, you can develop a question to investigate and use the literature review to show what sources are key to understanding the background, ideas, and debates that are the foundation for research on this question.
Who are the authorities on this subject? Who is frequently quoted? Who has done major research? How can you divide this subject into categories to organize what people should read?

2. Russian interference in the 2016 American election.
Write an essay in which you use top sources to make an argument for why Russian interference in the primary and general election for president in the United States is a fundamental threat to the survival of democratic government. The Senate Intelligence Committee hearing held in March 2017 featured a group of panelists who discussed a wide range of active measures that Russians used to destabilize the political system and influence Americans and the election. Your essay should ground itself in that hearing, which the Senate convened to provide a context for a full investigation. You will not be able to get to the bottom of what happened in the limited time you have, but you should be able to lay out what we know so far and use that to make an argument about why its important for college-age students to understand how and why Russia wants to influence Americans.
