ARTS & HANDWRITING
Competency 602.9.6 - Literacy Assessment: The graduate selects, creates, and
administers developmentally appropriate assessments and interprets results to plan or
modify instruction.
Introduction:
Teachers are always challenged with knowing the skill level of their students in all academic
areas. Because reading is such a developmental skill, it is especially important to know how
to quickly and accurately assess a students reading skills. This task will help you determine
what level of books students should engage in when reading for pleasure or for instruction.
When reading for pleasure, students should typically access books that are at their
independent reading level; however, during instructional time, students should choose
curriculum that offers an appropriate level of skill challenge and should find materials that
are at their instructional level. You should avoid providing any reading experiences that are
at a students frustration level so that lifelong reading pursuits are not discouraged.
An informal reading inventory (IRI) is the most common form of assessment used to
determine a students reading level. In this task you will be assessing students
independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels. Once the students reading levels
are determined, you will also learn to identify the reading level of various text passages so
that you can guide students to the appropriate level of reading material.
Task:
A. arrange to
assess two students reading skills using one of the attached informal reading
inventories at the appropriate level for each student.
Note: If possible, observe your PCE teachers as they administer reading assessments
before you administer them. If possible, practice administering the reading assessments
in this task with a child or another adult before administering them in the classroom
setting so you get a sense of how to record miscues, how much time you will need to
plan, and so on.
1. Administer the attached word lists to determine each of the two students starting
points.
a. Submit the attached word lists, using correct marking conventions to record
reading behaviors.
Note: Refer to the Gunning textbook to review correct marking conventions.
Administer the attached informal reading inventory passages to determine each
of the two students independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels.
Make certain you use reading symbols to note reading errors.
B. Complete a separate reading assessment for each of the two students you assessed by
doing the following:
1. Explain how you determined each students independent, instructional, and
frustration reading levels.
