Instruction
The next step is to familiarize yourself with the typology of museum displays. After finishing your spatial construct for midterm and before starting its translation into inhabitable space, you will have a critical look at some more engaging museum spaces in the local area. We will be looking at display areas that go beyond the supposedly neutral white box and create a more holistic experience. The boundaries between object and environment are blurred and allow us for a more complex experience of art and artifacts.
Choose between four specific exhibition spaces and concepts: Museum of Jurassic Technology
Natural History Museum Gem and Mineral Hall
LACMA Pre-Columbian Galleries
LACMA - Room of the Present Lazlo Moholy-Nagy
You can visit one, or all of them. Please coordinate with your peers, so all three museums have been visited by some of you. We will collect and share material about them. Also, coordinate transportation to save money. Visit the museum during class time on Friday 3/10. First just experience the space. Take notes about your emotional response to it. How does it feel? What is the relationship between display and space? Does the experience enhance the displayed objects? Is a story connected to it? Take some photos of it.
After your visit prepare an entry in our discussion forum on moodle. Post a minimum of one photo and write a minimum of 200 words about your experience.
