6-8 page essay. Choose a topic that you feel has been overlooked in our society as an issue or problem that needs to be corrected. With sources, explore why this problem persists in America and the rest of the world. Then explore ways to rectify the problem coming up with solutions that you find are viable. Discuss the outcome if the solutions were implemented and how would society go about implementing them. 2,000 word essay. Choose a cultural practice that we take for granted today. It could be almost anything: what we eat, how we dress, how we communicate in various circumstances, how we travel, how we assume or accept certain rolesin regard to gender, for exampleor even how we use currency or celebrate holidays. Something that we regard as completely normal. Consider this practice from all angles, including (but not limited to): how did it evolve and from what? how does it fit into our lives, and what functions does it fulfill? how have othersin different times and different culturesapproached this cultural practice? Play the part of an anthropologist: if you were to look at your topic as though it were unfamiliar and foreign, how would you describe it to someone who had never heard of such a practice? THEN: Once youve clearly discussed your topic in detail, imagine what this same cultural practice will look like in 75 years. (Which is, give or take, the average life span of a human being.) Give clear reasonsbased on critical thinking, intuition, and/or imaginationfor why you envision the future the way you do. In addition, what should happen, in your opinion? What would you like to see happen, and why? (What you think WILL happen and what you think SHOULD happen might plausibly be the same, but probably wont be.) Sources: For Essay#3, you are required to use at least four outside sources. If you are unable to find adequate sources, ask a professional for help. (Librarians are professionals, as is the dude who, for better or worse, gets paid to teach your English class.) Do not use wikipedia or ehow or ezine or about.com. You will almost certainly need to use parts of a book or scholarly articles. Citations: We will again be using the MLA System. Important material and ideas from other sourceswhether summarized, paraphrased, or quotedshould be properly cited, giving due credit to the author(s). When quoting, use appropriate signal phrases and blend the quotations into your own sentences. Your essay will use parenthetical/in-text citations that allow your readers to see the source of your ideas and how your representation of these ideas may or may not differ from the original. Peer Review: If you miss Peer Review Day, the points can be made up by including, with your final draft, a half-page single spaced self-reflection letter. Use this space to detail the process of researching and writing, and discuss the changes you made from the completion of your rough draft to the completion of your final draft, as well as any problems or snags you encountered along the way..
