Question #1: Using Samuel Farbers The Origins of the Cuban Revolution Reconsidered as your guide, discuss how and why the Cuban Revolution of 1959 was not merely a response to external forces like U.S. foreign policy. How, in other words, were revolutionary leaders like Fidel Castro autonomous agents pursuing their own intellectual/ideological visions of what an independent Cuba could look like?
Question #2: How did episodes like the Bay of Pigs invasion (1961) and the Cuban missile crisis (1962) come to inform the relationship between the United States and Cuba during the Cold War? Feel free to focus your response primarily on either nation and feel free to take into account such topics as foreign policy, culture, or immigration patterns.
Question #3: How did the dynamics of the Cold War continue to inform U.S. policy toward Cuba in the post-Cold War era? Here, you may want to consider such topics as the political importance of the Cuban refugee population in the United States, the continued presence of former Soviet Union citizens in Cuba, and the rationale behind selecting a site like Guantanamo Bay as an important detention center for the global War on Terror.
