Please respond to this essay in 100 words: ( Crusades first began in 1095. It was first called by Pope Urban 2nd in France. The crusades were a way to get people to join in to reclaim or claim land by promising something else in return for the people who participate in the crusade. The Church became involved in the crusades because it would offer spiritual prize for any one who took place in the crusades. This way anyone who decided to help with the crusade would be promised to be forgiven of any sins they did and have eternal life.
This idea for crusades is what helped to motivate the Knights to join the crusades and also what motivated the Church. The crusade helped give meaning to why the Knights were fighting. Before the Knights joined crusades, the Knights had no reason to kill and meaninglessly kill anyone. The crusades were a way to change that. The Knights were put on a mission to reclaim the Holy Land, which is Jerusalem. Jerusalem was and still is a very sacred land. This is because this is where Jesus lived and spent the time of his life. In return for capturing the Holy Land the Knights would be forgiven of their sinful actions. This would save the Knights from eternally ending up in Hell. This is what made the Crusade so successful in the beginning. This helped the Church because they could end meaningless killing done by the Knights while spreading their religion to the Knights, all while recapturing the Holy Land of Jerusalem.
The Crusades were initially successful because of how important religion was at this time to the people. Jerusalem was very important to many people. Because of the crusade the Catholic Church was able to move closer to the Orthodox and heal problems going on in between the churches. The idea of the Crusade spread all over. Many people wanted to get on board of the Crusades because it was an easy way to be forgiven of there sins. Also the thought of adventure, small money rewards, and honor also was appealing to people.
The crusaders extended their reach to Byzantines then into Antioch. The crusade then went into parts of Syria such as Ascalon and also into Jerusalem and some Italian cites. They later reached into strong Muslim cities.
The Crusaders however after capturing Antioch began to face hardships. Disease began killing many of them and they already had lost many horses. Adhemar of Le Puy had died from disease. This created a divide and many problems for the crusaders because he was the leader of the crusade. Half of the crusaders wanted to stay and hold on to Antioch. The other crusaders wanted to finish out the mission and make it to Jerusalem. After this crusaders were breaking off in many different cities because they wanted to stay and keep hold of the city they captured. Many crusaders were happy with their success and wanted to return to their home, family, and life. Only about three hundred crusaders ended up staying in Jerusalem. After a while many Christians started to move into Jerusalem and the crusaders managed to hold on to their control. The religious communities then started to grow because it was being ran by the Christians.
The Crusaders were finally brought to an end after taking a defeat in Damascus, a strong Muslim city. This led to the Muslims to start growing in confidence. Jerusalem then fell from the Crusaders and the Muslims took over. After this a few more crusades were tried to retake the hold over Jerusalem but were not successful. Today the legacy of crusades is still used. Muslim extremist groups today can describe themselves a crusaders because what they are doing however this may not be the exact case.)
