  • If I wanted a preschool boy or girl to adopt a less steretypical gender schema I would first, just let them be themselves. If the boy wanted to play with Barbie dolls or wear dresses, then I would support it. If a girl said that she wanted to become a fire fighter, then I would support it. I would encourage the child to just be themselves, to be able to express what they liked, not what other people or what society deems as what they should like, but what they, individually as a human likes. I believe that gender schema can come from the surrounding environment, especially peer and parental influences. For example, before the child is even born, the parents would choose to paint the nursery, or buy certain color clothes or toys for the child. So from the very beginning, the child is essentially being brain washed to follow those gender schemas. Also, from a young age, if a boy wanted to play with dolls or to paint instead of run around and play rough with the other boys, the other boy classmates could make fun of him and bully him. Having the father as the main provider of the house can also affect the child's outlook on gender roles. The boy could see that the mother just stayed home and watched the kids while the father/male went out to work versus when both of the parents went to work. I believe that today we are breaking a lot of gender stereotypes. Even though gender schema is not a completely eliminated, we are slowly chipping away at it's flaws. The wage gap is closing, schools are encouraging children to express who they are starting from young age, LGBTQ rights and open minded people.

  • In most of the cultures since the baby is born gender is titled to their mind, appearance and everyday activities. Boys are mostly associated with the color blue and girls with pink. Parents, teachers, and caregivers play a huge role in these gender schemas. Parents prefer to buy cars doe boys, and dolls for girls and make them restrict to these gender based toys and activities because this is what the society is teaching. When kids go to preschools they already have these stereotypical gender schemas because this is what they learned in their home environment and outside. Due to this boys prefer to play with boys and girls with girls. To break this stereotypical schemas parents should let their child be his/her self since the beginning and let them play with every toy that they prefer and make them do all types of activities. Moreover, teachers at preschools should do activities that involves dolls, and kitchen sets; and require everyone to participate in groups of half girls and boys to teach them that there is no difference in genders and it is normal for boys to play with dolls and girls to play with cars. Most importantly parents should teach the importance of individuals to their child instead of Boys and Girls. Also, little girls should be told that all colors are beautiful and they can wear pants also instead of just wearing little dresses. Teachers, Parents, and all the caregivers should allow all the kids to be themselves and encourage them to play all types of games free from gender stereotype.
