3 quick summaries of work...
1. Eugene Delacroix is a great Romantic painter. True, he was rivaled by the painter Theodore Gericault, but he remains a favorite of art historians and museum goers even today.
Research Delacroix on the web.
find Romantic compositions that "speak to you." If you do, be very sure to include mention of them within your response.
In a paragraph or two, how does the style of Delacroix exemplify the goals of the Romantic style? How is action and movement conveyed in the work of Delacroix? Give specific answers.
Similarly how music seems to amplify the emotions, carry you along and lead toward emotional crescendos? Each or you probably likes differing compositions. There is no right answer. This is an instance of exploring, listening, and "speaking" about how the music affects you and how the music exemplifies the Romantic era.
2. Review a Monet web site. Select a picture by Monet and briefly analyze its composition. Compare his composition style to that of the somewhat later artists: Renoir, Pissaro and perhaps Degas. What significant characteristics of the style of each artist seemingly combined to define Impressionism.
Listen to the musical selections included in this module that feature the work of Debussy. How does the "new" sound of the time period seem to create a mood or an "impression"? What composition aspects do the color patches of Monet and friends and the compositions seem to share? Do you like Impressionism? In painting? In music?
3.Check websites for Gustave Klimt, Georgia OKeefe, and William de Kooning.
Pick one. Write a brief paragraph or two summarizing the artists style. Include at least one work as a reference point.
Write another paragraph indicating why you like or do not like your chosen artists work. OR
Look very modern architects such as I.M. Pei, Frank Gehry, Eero Saarinen and or Louis Kahn. Select a couple of works or each; then compare and contrast their styles. OR
Do some research on American Jazz or Blues. Decide which you seem to prefer. Do a little more research. Compare and contrast some signature works of each of the artists that you prefer. Here are a couple of sites to get you started.
George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue
Jazz of the 1920's and so on. Please see the Music Selection section for a couple of "starters."
