Writing Assignment - Stress & Health Psychology Cha 3
Improving Coping and Stress Management
For this Writing Activity you will need to create a plan for dealing with stress of college life, based on the material provided in the textbook. Your goal is to make this a realistic plan, one you believe you could carry out. You will need to determine what stressors college life creates and how they are affecting you. You do not have to put your plan into practice, but instead describe what you would do to deal with stress and explain how to carry out the plan.
In your paper, you will need to address the components listed below.
Analyze the bodys response to managing stressful situations according to the:
duel-track response system.
general adaptation syndrome.
B. Use one stress-related psychophysiological symptom to evaluate coping techniques from the following perspectives:
emotion-focused coping.
problem-focused coping
The following may be helpful...
the dual-track system by which our body responds to stress: Our response to stress is a prime example of mind-body interaction. The first (and faster) track of the stress-response system is the fight-or-flight response, identified by Walter Cannon, in which the sympathetic nervous system responds to a stressor on several fronts: The inner parts of the adrenal glands pour out epinephrine and norepinephrine, heart and respiration rates increase, blood flows away from digestive organs and toward skeletal muscles, sensations of pain diminish, and the body releases stored sugar and fat. On the slower track of the system, the cerebral cortex, perceiving a stressor, stimulates the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland to trigger the release of glucocorticoid stress hormones, such as cortisol, from the outer part of the adrenals.
the three phases of the general adaptation syndrome: The three stages of the general adaptation syndrome, Hans Selyes concept of the bodys response to stress, are alarm (temporary shock state in which the body mobilizes resources), resistance (period of coping with the stressor), and exhaustion (depletion of reserves following prolonged stress).
Approach the essay as mini research papers. That is, address each question as if you are writing a research paper. This means you will need to do some researching to make your comments. Your major resource for this course will be your text book. That is, before you write and submit any essays, read the text! Also, always list your text as a reference. Include at least 2 additional sources as a reference
