Blackboard Discussion Assignment: Historians have relied largely on written documents in order to excavate and recreate the lives of ordinary people. Writing the histories of Native Americans, women, and workers is especially challenging, due to issues of literacy, power, class, and the primacy of oral versus written documentation. Do these documents tell us more about those writing them (European) than those who are described? Why or why not? Whose experiences get lost, and can we utilize these documents in ways that reveal more about those otherwise silenced? Using primary and secondary sources (from this and prior weeks reading), write a paragraph or two developing your argument.
