Question 1 Sometimes we like stinky things. People enjoy rotten shark, thousand-year-old eggs, the smells of dirt and cheese and other stuff. Our idea of what's delicious can be unexpected, too. Try to distinguish the bottom-up part of smells and tastes from the top-down part. Engen, T. (1982). The Perception of Odors. New York: Academic Press Illustration credit: http://embor.embopress.org/content/8/7/629 Question Let’s finish with an argumentative conclusion, that perception in old age is driven by top-down expectations. For example, attention does not necessarily decline with age though stimuli that compete for attention may be processed less well. Is there any better evidence for the importance of top-down processes in old age than the observation that old people continue hearing when they remove their hearing aids?
