Instruction
In this class, we have begun to read and discuss a wide variety of ideas related to achieving social
justice through nonviolent means. The writers have discussed how to use nonviolent methods
to resist, why nonviolence is a more effective means to make change in the long run, and the
ends of achieving community.
This paper assignment asks you to choose and develop a focused, close reading of two different
texts by two different writers we have read so far this semester to discuss one aspect of
nonviolence.
• You should choose a topic that you find interesting and that can be supported primarily
through close attention to the texts of the readings. You do not need to do additional
research for this paper. Use secondary readings very sparingly and only if appropriate
to the topic you’re working on.
• Your paper should be an organized, formal essay, and should be no more than four
TYPED, DOUBLE SPACED pages (approximately 1000-1200 words). Every word is
precious. Omit anything that is too general, and say as much as possible with as few
words as possible.
• Always bear in mind that you are presenting a convincing ARGUMENT, not simply
making remarks about things that are interesting or writing a summary of each writer’s
ideas. The texts should be used to supply evidence. Quote from them in moderation
to back up your assertions. If it helps, think of your paper as a court case: you want to
persuade your audience. Don't hide contradictory evidence -- react to it, show how
your argument explains it.
• Keep a formal tone. Take your writing seriously. Proofread assiduously. What you
have to say about the text is important, and will be graded seriously.
• Be brave. Take risks. As long as you are making a thoughtful, text-based argument
and are attentive to the quality of your writing, it is difficult to go wrong. Exercise your
intellect and imagination in this short essay. Grant yourself the luxury of having enough
time to think your argument through, and build in time to revise.
