Instruction
There are two main objectives in this first essay, which should be written following MLA requirements.
Write an objective summary of an outside source
Follow up with a response in which you take a position in relation to the ideas expressed in the source and provide both supporting reasons for your stance and a discussion of differing perspectives.
The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that your opinion is valid and justifiable. You should support your argument with evidence to demonstrate the validity of your claims and also present and refute opposing perspectives to show your own fairness and credibility.
Step 1: Select the source you will summarize and respond to from the following option:
On its Opinion pages, USA Today, a daily national newspaper, presents a daily editorial which takes a stance on one side of an issue currently in the news. Select and read one of the Opinion editorials that contains either an “Our view” or an “Opposing view” or an editorial that clearly takes a position on a current issue. Do not use a letter to the editor for your selection or a general column in the publication.
Step 2: In a 750-1000 word essay, first briefly summarize the key points of either the “Our view” or “Opposing view” editorial, then use the rest of the essay to state your position in relation to the author's main idea. Your thesis should clearly state your stance (position) in response to the opinion expressed in the editorial, and the rest of the essay should then provide the reasons for your agreement/disagreement, clearly supported by details, facts, and other material as appropriate. You should also include opposing viewpoints to enhance your own credibility and ethos in the paper.
