The debate over stem cells pits the moral imperative to relieve suffering against the moral imperative to protect the sanctity of life. Does the potential for major advancements in the medical field warrant the immediate use of of stem cells despite the debate over the start of "personhood?" Some fodder for discussion: Where do you draw the moral line? Embryonic stem cells - is there a difference between embryos created for research and cast off IVF embryos that would be destroyed? Nuclear transfer embryos: created by inserting an adult's DNA into a denucleated donor egg that could grow into a "clone" of the adult who gave the DNA if implanted successfully in a uterus. Nuclear transfer embryos with the placenta genes turned off (as created in the Jaenish lab and discussed in the NOVA series on stem cells) so they are not capable of implantation.
