Read the case questions (“Questions for Case 7, The Corporation.”) These are presently posted in Canvas in the module for “Week 13, Class Materials, Managing Internal Operations- Actions That Promote Good Strategy Execution II.” They will soon be posted in “Week 12, Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Sustainability and Strategy.”
Read the article by Rushworth Kidder, “It’s the Culture, Stupid!”, from his October 20, 2008, Ethics Newsline commentary.
Review the California Academic Press Holistic Critical Thinking Rubric. This is also currently posted in Canvas in the module for Week 13, and will soon be posted in Week 12.
Rate the documentary “The Corporation” using the rubric.
Decide which of the following four rating categories the documentary falls into:
Strong Critical Thinking (4): This is the top box in the rubric.
Acceptable Critical Thinking (3). This is the second box.
Unacceptable Critical Thinking (2). The third box.
Weak Critical Thinking (1). The fourth box.
To do this, review the 6-7 statements that are itemized with tick boxes in each box (1, 2, 3, and 4). Mark the statements that most accurately describe the way that The Corporation presents its arguments. Once you have reviewed the entire list on the page and marked your selections, note which box contains the most statements that describe the documentary’s presentation accurately. This box (“Strong Critical Thinking,” “Acceptable Critical Thinking,” etc.) will indicate the rating that best reflects your assessment.
Note your rating as the answer to case question 1.
Answer case questions 2 and 3. As you do so, consider Kidder’s the ‘Ten Most Wanted’ characteristics of cultures of integrity. Please number your answers to correspond to the questions.
Answer the questions as briefly as you can. If you can answer the question in one sentence, great. (It usually takes 3-4). If the question asks you to make an interpretation or recommendation, then you may need to develop your answer at more length and this may require one or more paragraphs. In any case, be as brief as you can while still answering the question fully.
Use bullet points! If the case questions ask you to argue a point, and that argument is made up of three parts, use three bullet points to summarize it. Make each point as brief as possible.
Use evidence (reasons, data) to support your answers. Cite only evidence needed to support your points directly.
Remember: we all know the story in the movie. You may refer to people, companies or phenomena as simply "the CEO of the rug company” for example. Please explain only material that you add to the text.
Cites:
I recommend that you do not bring in any outside materials. Accordingly, you do not need to make any citations.
However, you may bring in outside materials if you feel that they would be helpful in making your points or supporting your recommendations.
These will require citations.
Case write-up body:
Please type in Word, 2 pages maximum, 12 pt block format, with headings.
Bullet points are encouraged.
