The Assignment: Write a 4-5 page paper (12 point font, double spaced, standard margins) making an argument about the way in which the Catholic-Christian doctrine of God (Bauerschmidt ch 2) and the claim associated with the Council of Chalcedon that Jesus Christ is one person with two natures (Bauerschmidt ch 4) cohere with each other. By ‘cohere’, I mean that these two doctrines fit together logically, they are coherent together, they do not contradict each other, they both fit within the same theological vision or system. If it helps, think about it in relation to this question: How is the Christian claim that Jesus Christ is God Incarnate different from the mythological claim about Achillies, who had one divine parent and one human parent? How does this difference relate to both Chalcedon’s christological claim and the ‘grammar of divinity’ discussed by Bauerschmidt in 2.3, especially perhaps 2.3.2? Why isn’t it just a contradiction to say that one person can have two entirely different natures? You may draw on course lectures and conversations as well as Bauerschmidt and Scripture. A well argued paper will give a clear account both of what Chalcedon is claiming, as well as a clear account of the relevant aspect(s) of the doctrine of God, in order to make clear the claim about how, in Catholic thought, these can cohere.
