Instruction
Written Assignments: All written material should be professionally prepared, well thought-out, and well organized. References should include complete citations; this includes citations from the Internet. Documents should be prepared in APA format, including double-spacing, 12-point font and reasonable margins. Remember to use the running head as well as other specifics when writing with the APA format. You may seek help at the writing center and/or use the APA Publication Manual or electronically, look at the Purdue Owl Website: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
YOUR NAME, DATE, COURSE AND ASSIGNMENT TITLE MUST BE ON ALL PAPERS! I only want cover pages as required by APA. I do not want you to start half way down a page. Follow APA as it is worth a full 10% of the paper grade. Furthermore, any charts, graphs, etc., need to be in an appendix section of the paper and bullet pointed items need to be single-spaced and should not be longer than 5 bullets points. Also, a COVER PAGE, REFERENCE PAGE, ABSTRACT and APPENDIX never count for the required page length of any assignment. Simply copying and pasting work from another author is inappropriate and does not illustrate originality, but instead, borders on plagiarism. Failure to follow the above instructions will result in points being deducted. Also, be advised, I will deduct 10% for each page short and 10% for each day late that any written work is turned in. After day four, I will no longer accept any work and a zero will be entered in the grade book. Therefore, please look at the schedule and know when your work is due. I AM FIRM ON THIS REQUIREMENT! For example, a paper is due by midnight on Sunday and you turn it in at 5 after midnight. You have just lost 10% for being a day late. Do not let this happen to you.
When submitting papers for upload they should be saved as follows: Last name, First name_Title of assignment_HCM 3010
Research Paper: This course requires a research paper as part of the course assignments. The research paper is designed to enhance your learning on a topic from the course, provide you with an opportunity to work on your writing skills, give you the time to research scholarly sources and finally, teach yourself to construct an upper-level writing assignment within a timed period and under specific guidelines.
You will have discretion when it comes to choosing your topic, but it must come from one of the broad topics that are covered in the textbook. In other words, you must choose one of the broad topics from chapters 1-14 and then determine what you would like to do with the topic. For example, chapter 11, Long-term Care Human Resources may be your chosen topic, but then you need to break it down and explain what you wish to research, what you wish to find out and why. You are required to send your professor an email indicating your chosen topic. You cannot use a paper that you have written in the past. This must be a research paper of original content from this course. Speak with your professor if you have any questions.
The actual paper must follow all of the written instructions that are outlined above in the writing assignments section. In addition, the paper will be at least 6 pages in length and no longer than 8. This is firm. 5.5 pages will result in an automatic 5% deduction before any grading takes place and anything over 8 will be deleted. YOU MUST FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS! Finally, the paper must include 5-7 sources on the reference page. One of these may be and should be your text. You may also use more than 7 sources, but you may not use less than 5.
Power Point:
Each student will put together a ppt. presentation that outlines his or her chosen research topic. This presentation will be posted to the professor via the assignment tab. You must use ppt. and it must contain 5-7 slides in addition to the cover/introduction slide and any appendix or citation slides. The ppt. should be prepared as if you are presenting in person to a group of co-workers or other professionals. Successful students will include info-graphics, charts, and other visual aids relevant to the presentation. At the same time, a full page picture does not count towards your page length requirement and would probably not be acceptable in a professional presentation. Your presentation should accompany your research paper like an outline. Clarity, organization, aesthetics, and professionalism count towards your overall grade.
