Instruction
A Day in the Life of a Pathogen/Micro-organism:
During week 4, you will draw a microorganism/pathogen to write an essay “A day in the life of a micro-organism”. You will write the essay from the point of view of the microorganism that you are given. The pathogen can be a bacteria, fungus, protozoa or virus. Information to include in the essay include, morphology, gram stain characteristics, virulence factors, susceptibility to antibiotics, host cells, nutritional needs (perhaps nutrients that you can’t make yourself), growth conditions, how you evade the immune system (if you do) and mode of invasion into the host(s), your interactions with the hosts and diseases you cause and body systems you affect. Additionally, explain symptoms when you infect a host, diagnosis and therapeutic intervention needed. You may also add information on statistics related to infection (epidemiology) and any new research findings related to the pathogen. This is intended to be a fun project so use your imagination and describe a day in the life of your pathogen.
Grading rubric:
Introduction – who you are and why you are important – 5 points
Body - morphology, gram stain characteristics, virulence factors, susceptibility to antibiotics, host cells, nutritional needs, growth conditions, how you evade the immune system and mode of invasion into the host(s), your interactions with the hosts, diseases you cause, body systems you affect, symptoms, diagnosis, therapy, statistics and new research– 30 points
Grammar and style – references, in-text citations, everything in APA format – 5 points.
