4.1 assignment
Background Information
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 13:1).
This can be a challenging verse in the context of advocacy. Quite often, we find ourselves raising concerns about the decisions that are made by governmental and legal policy makers. We are often faced with the question of when and whether it is appropriate to challenge governmental actions as they impact the rights and opportunities available to the individuals we are representing.
Consider, for example, the issue of abortion. The “law of the land” provides opportunities for women to pursue an abortion under certain conditions outlined in the law at the national and state levels. For many Christians, this presents a conflict with what they would say is a biblical mandate not to kill (i.e., in this case, not to take the life of a baby). This presents a dilemma from two perspectives: a) The extent to which Christians who oppose abortion should oppose the “governing authorities” in relation to this issue, and b) What types of strategies are appropriate and biblical in relation to expressing opposition to abortion. This example could be extended to other legal/legislative issues that many Christians would say are in direct opposition to biblical teaching (e.g., immigration laws, gay marriage).
As advocates, and as Christians, we must assess our own beliefs and the degree to which those beliefs support or, perhaps, conflict with the interests and beliefs of those for whom we advocate. This should provide some excellent background for our discussions.
