1. Since the victims’ rights movement of the 1970s the US has made tremendous progress in responding to victims’ needs but there are still problems with governments’ response. Choose one of these topics below and explain the following:
1. what do we do well in this area?
2. what problems still exist in this area?
3. identify 2 policies that would improve our the government’s response in this area
-compensation/restitution
-a specific service for victims (for example, emergency shelters, counseling)
-law enforcement/first responders
-legal system/prosecution, judges
-restoring victims – restorative justice programs
-crime prevention

3. At the beginning of the semester I asked you to tell me about someone who know who was victimized. You told me about the incident, whether the person reported the victimization, if they received services, whether the offender was punished, and how the victim was coping with the victimization.

Now that you have studied victims services, what advice would you give the person victimized about reporting the crime, the services available, how to deal with law enforcement and the legal system, and how to cope with the impact of the crime on them physically, emotionally/psychologically, and/or financially?
