Instructions: Students are expected to track the social mobility of a specific racial or ethnic group of their choice. Racial and ethnic progress should be measured using the following variables: Class: measuring the population of the ethnic group in question based on class standing. Example* African Americans make x percent of the overall population of the middle class in America Mortality: students should compare the overall mortality rates (lifespan) of the racial or ethnic group they are covering in their papers. Education: Students are expected to measure education of the group of choice based on level of education Example* 40% of adult Irish Americans have a high school diploma or better

Structure of Paper: The structure of the Social Advancement paper should be as follows: Introduction: In this section, students are expected to identify/ define the racial or ethnic group of their choice. Also included in the introduction should be a historical context that explains the socio- political situation that lead to the group in question immigrating to the US. Social Status after immigration: Students are expected to talk about the reaction of the American public to the immigration of the said group. This includes white settlers. How did the arrival of the group change the social atmosphere of America? Also, if data regarding class, mortality and education is available, then it also should be included. Current Status: This is where students incorporate present data regarding class, mortality, and education. In addition, students are expected to discuss the social environment of the country that lead to the current status of the said group. Be sure to incorporate theory, historical events and laws that are discussed in your book and learned in class. Conclusion: Comparatively discuss the current status of the group of choice to the status experience by that group upon arrival to America. Length Guidelines and Citation: Paper should be no shorter than 5 pages in length, double spaced not including the reference page. ALL INFORMATION ACQUIRED FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER SHOULD BE PROPERLY CITED. Students should use no less than 5 peer reviewed sources and no more than 2 non peer reviewed sources. 2 of the 5 peer reviewed sources should be books. The paper should be written in ASA format.
