These are not the questions for the paper, but I thought it could spark some ideas and it would be great if you mention those details.
Try to focus on what these two movies share in common like materialism and lack of individualism and ideologies.

For the Network (1976) response, here is the question: the relationship between Diana (Faye Dunaway) and Max (William Holden) exhibited stark generational differences. As evidenced by Diana's pursuit of higher ratings, her ideas for original programming, and her working relationship with Frank Hackett (Robert Duvall) and as evidenced by Max's precarious position at work, his eagerness to have an affair, and especially his impassioned speeches to Diana, what were the generational differences between Diana and Max? How did those differences reflect the sense and sensibility of mid-1970s America?

Class notes:
Corporate cosmology, power of television in effecting peoples view, individualism, ideologies not important anymore. Conservatism developing from the 60s- 80s.

For Soylent Green, here is your question: based upon our discussion today, what do you feel is the driving narrative behind the film's plotline? Does Soylent Green address the extreme of Thomas Malthus' prophecy, which at the turn of the 20th century stated human population would inevitably outpace the world's food supply? Does it mirror the perceived decline of America in light of the 1973 oil crisis, inflation, and our withdrawal from Vietnam? Does it speak to the rise of the multinational corporation and its perceived superseding of nations and individuals? Does it reinforce masculinity at a time when traditional masculine values, as Cowie's Stayin' Alive argues, were under siege? Or, does the film's narrative allegorize something else entirely?

Class notes:
Richard Nixon being environmentalist, Pollution, Native residence caring more about their land than new comers, overpopulated areas, no more space, women portrayed as piece of furniture, first earth day 1970.

Please use simpler vocabulary as I am an international student and English is not my first language.

Must use any of these sources:
1973 Nervous breakdown by Andreas Killen
Stayin' Alive by Jefferson Cowie
Easy Riders Raging Bulls by Peter Biskino

  • I emailed m professor about t topic of the paper and he sent me this `you need to determine what you mean by `materialism.` Both films delve into this, but in different ways. As a topic, it works. But you'll need some deeper explanation on materialism. One film seems to be about limited resources and the coveting of what remains of them while the other is about co-opting things and `mainstreaming` them via television.` Thanks
