Part 1
Annotated Bibliography
For the annotated bibliography, generate at least 15 articles about addictions. These articles should describe and assess evidence-based approaches and the more recent responses to treatment of solution-focused and motivational therapies, as applied to the various settings for a U.S. city population of about 70,000.
Length 1000 words or more, with references cited at the end.
Part 2
When meeting with the parents, teachers, and school counselors be prepared to pitch a motivational interviewing group therapy program for high school teens with alcohol and substance use concerns or use.
o Explain to the adults the principles of motivational interviewing (MI).
o Describe the MI group model and how it differs from the AA model and psycho-educational treatments.
o Predict the questions that the teachers and parents might ask about the approach. Develop and answer five questions of potential concern.
o Do not attend to logistics such as meeting times. Concentrate on theory and practical application to help the adult participants understand how you will help the teens with alcohol substance use issues.
o Length, 500 words or more. Cite your sources.
Part 3
Methadone Availability
For this part, visit the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD) and the Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Web sites.
Although methadone is a controlled substance and an extremely effective treatment for heroin addiction, it can be administered only by federally sanctioned treatment clinics. Because methadone, like heroin, is a narcotic, some people have criticized this treatment as simply replacing one drug with another drug. For this discussion:
o Examine the arguments made in favor or against making methadone more available to people with heroin addictions.
o Provide your opinion about deregulating how methadone is administered in an effort to increase its availability.
o Discuss how a methadone user would integrate treatment with the tenets of Narcotics Anonymous.
o Length, 500 words or more. Cite references.
Part 4
This part uses the previous 15 peer-reviewed journals and references, from the annotated bibliography. For this part the paper must be 27-29 pages in length:
o Select a specific client population you currently serve or intend to serve (for example, homeless youth, women, minority groups, adolescents and college students, senior citizens, or people with AIDS).
o Consider the complexities of assessing and treating co-morbid, dual diagnosis conditions within the population.
o Develop a paper that examines the impact of substance abuse on this population, along with the theory, including solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), motivational therapy, and evidence-based approaches to providing treatment services for them, both on an individual (micro) and systems (macro) level.
o Include any historical and current policy issues that may have prevented or supported treatment-service delivery to this client group.
o Make some preliminary assessments for enhancing service delivery for this population.
o Cite sources and references
Part 5
Traditionally, substance abuse and mental health benefits in insurance plans do not equal those for other medical conditions. This lack has become a significant focus for behavioral health care advocates who argue that benefits should be equal. Analyze the parity debate and provide your own position as to why parity for substance abuse benefits in managed care programs does or does not make sense. Consider what you have learned about solution-focused therapy and how it might fit with the managed care system.
Cite sources and references, 500 words or more.
