For this assignment, you will write an essay exploring how to address the issue of contingent or symbolic citizenship and other growing nativist attitudes by researching strategies for alliance building or addressing racism, prejudice, and discrimination. This is your opportunity to explore current options available or to present your own ideas for addressing these important social issues. This assignment asks you to pick a concept we have already explored, related to racism or ideas of contingent citizenship, and then you are asked to do your own outside research to explore strategies for addressing the issue raised by the concept. The strategies are not found in your text, they are to be researched and identified by you, using outside resources through the library, other online sources, an organization that works to address racism, etc . If you cannot find a strategy, then you may discuss your ideas for a strategy but you should demonstrate, in your paper, that you have explored/researched ideas for strategies. The task of presenting solutions may seem daunting and no one solution will be the magic fix but there are solutions out there and more needs to be implemented. As the saying goes, "no one can do everything, but everyone can do something." Here are some prompts to help you begin thinking about how to approach this assignment: What strategy(ies) did you find through your research? How is it/are they being implemented? What results have they produced? Is this something you could/would do? What other ideas do you have? Other thoughts on the issue(s)? Requirements: You are required to cite from course material presented to date (Spickard Ch 1-4 or videos) and at least one other outside reference in your essay. Additionally, you may also include your own lived experience to complete this assignment. This is a scholarly exercise in critical thinking about the readings, understanding of key terms and definitions, and application of course material to contemporary life. Include a thesis statement and support your statement through your essay Cite course material Incorporate at least one of the key terms we have discussed to-date, into your narrative. Demonstrate your understanding of the key term through your writing (See Key Concepts 1Preview the document and 2 Preview the documentdocuments for list)--you may use the same key concept used in CL1 Research outside sources for strategies used to address the issue raised by the course concept you have chosen Include a specific example of how this strategy has been employed (you may use yourself for the example) Cite at least 1 outside source (your primary outside source must be a scholarly source, if you include more than one source, you may include one--only one--non-scholarly source; WIKIPEDIA IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN ANY INSTANCE) Include a reference list using proper formatting for citations (APA, MLA, or other accepted scholarly citation format) and your reference list Text should be double-spaced 750-word minimum to 1300-word maximum excluding title and reference list. Essays fewer than 750 words will be penalized proportionally. Tip: avoid phrases such as "I believe" or "I feel" or "in my opinion." Use instead, phrases like "I argue" or "I think" or "in my lived experience" or "I have observed"--this strengthens the persuasiveness of your paper and is in keeping with a scholarly format.
