I could manipulate the IQ results to see if it has an effect on depression, just like a experimental design could be the effects of group therapy on anxiety, but i can also say I want to know the relation between the two.

The best thing about multiple variables; in this case, the two condition and the sound are that the researcher will answer numerous questions. For example, the psychologist would answer, the role of pattern and sound in memory retention.
