You need to write 2 separate (different) discussion posts for 2 people. 1. Choose ONE of the following prompts. Option 1: Identify a nursing care problem or issue that is NOT related to staffing. Explain the problem in a paragraph. Then, Describe the problem solving/decision making approach that you and other nurses could use to creatively address this nursing care problem or issue. What research, best practices, decision making grids, new equipment/supplies, education, new technology, consultation, etc. might be considered in this decision-making process? Option 2: Explain and differentiate between the characteristics of a manager and a leader and Choose one Classic OR one 21st Century leadership style or theory. Describe characteristics and behaviors associated with this leadership style or theory and how they might be useful for today’s nurse leaders/managers. In either choice, be sure to apply concepts from the readings and research. Cite all references using APA format. Choose one of the following and write 2 different things for 2 different people. Or, you can pick option 1 for one person, and option 2 for another. Make sure you have in-text citations and APA reference

  • This is 1: There are many differences between a manager and a leader. At first, managers have employees who work for them while leaders have people who follow them in their daily actions (Abraham & Scaria, 2017). Managing involves sophisticated processes of administration, supervision and decision making to confirm that daily responsibilities are executed effectively while leaders get people to comprehend and have faith in their vision and work to achieve their goals. Managers are focused on people’s needs; they pay attention and engage them. Managers can direct, review resources and expect needs along the way of operation. Leaders can challenge, inspire and communicate to the people to inform them about benefits of living a visionary life to keep the team fully engaged.

Leaders have the confidence to listen and address nursing issues.

  • And this is 2: The terms Manager and Leader often get tossed around and confused with one another when in reality they mean different things. The word ‘Manager’ refers to “the act of handling or controlling something successfully” (Marquis, Huston, 2012) while the meaning of ‘Leader’ refers to “the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal” (Marquis, Huston, 2012). Although the two terms may seem similar, their role in the community is different. To be a manager, you are required to overcome any obstacle that may be thrown your way in order for you and the ones you are managing to be successful. For example, a nurse manager may see a conflict happened between his or her two employees and he or she will intervene by communicating with both of them separately and also together to resolve the issue.

  • To be a nurse leader you are required to provide confidence in those who follow you to reach a specific goal you all intend to be at. For example, a nursing leader can set an example to others in the work environment by always being on time, following proper guidelines and ensuring the safety of the work environment. This can refer to something as simple as hand hygiene (simple yet effective) to prevent any complications. A nurse leader may not need to ‘manage’ the ones who report to him or her rather the nursing manager position can do that while the nurse manager does not need to intervene with his or her staff as the leader is there to set an example. In that case, I think the manager should and will intervene when he or she sees that the nurse leader is not adequately filling the positon of leader at the time.

  • A common yet simple theory/style of leadership is the Chain of command. The chain of command refers to the line of authority in which an issue or concern needs to be dealt with. This type of leadership is used all around the world, even the United States Government uses it by following the chain and eventually leading towards the President who is at the top of the chain. In nursing, the chain of command can be different from each work environment. For example, in certain departments the Director at the top of the chain following the supervisors, managers, leaders and the employees. In cases which the Director is unable to take control of a certain situation, the administrative side of the hospital or clinic involved will take over and see if they are able to deal with the situation.

  • This system is useful in modern day nursing because it gives the people who are involved certain roles they must follow and if they realize or even question something that may be above their command, they can refer to someone who is higher up in the chain to help with the situation. Great managers and leaders work together with their staff and environment to overcome and obstacle that may be in their way. “Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Far too often nurses think that asking for such assistance makes them appear to be less competent. The chain of command can truly help a nurse solve a difficult situation, and it can also help protect a nurse’s license in case of a negative outcome” (Clavreul, 2018).
