  • That result, divided by the Truck Capacity gives you the % of a LTL load shipped for each order. Multiple that by miles and cost per LTL mile gives you LTL shipping cost per order. Multiply each of those by number of orders per year (D/Q) and you get total transportation cost per store. For warehouses, assume Dead Net Pricing, that transportation cost is built in to the cost charged by the suppliers. Add up the transport cost for all stores to arrive at total annual transportation cost. The last phase then, is to try out different combinations of where you put warehouses.

If you eliminate a warehouse under consideration, did the total cost rise or fall? Adding a city/state in this way will automatically shift store supply to that warehouse if it is nearest. After adding a new warehouse, look at the total cost. Did it rise or fall? You can also shift warehouse locations by entering the new city/state for an existing warehouse. Try various combinations of either eliminating, shifting, or adding warehouses until you get to a lowest total cost that you are reasonably able to find

  • So you can check to see that you are in the ballpark with the assumptions I have used in my solution, I have posted for the Target case. You DO NOT have to match these assumptions because varying pallet sizes and master cartons can be used. That said, most good solutions should be somewhere in this ballpark with some margin of difference.

  • I got new massage form my teacher, There are a couple of small issues with my dataset. Mainly there are 4 cities which have a latitude and longitude of 0,0. This creates some weird distances from warehouses that you may see in your solution. I DO NOT expect you to fix those. To speed up the calculations I hard coded the distances into the Distances tab, so even if you fix the latitude/longitude, it will still reflect a weird distance. No worries, my fault, not yours. Last, several teams had an issue with very low transportation cost. What they had done was correctly calculate the FTL and LTL transportation amounts, distances and cost per mile, but had stopped there. They had calcuclated the transportation cost PER ORDER. You have to multiply these costs by the number of orders per year (D/Q) to arrive at the ANNUAL transportation costs.
