One of the more difficult aspects of giving feedback to students who have made errors relates to the importance of creating a classroom climate where errors are a natural part of the learning process rather than sins to be taken personally by teacher or student (Hofmeister & Lubke, 1999, p. 100).
When teachers encourage students to ask follow-up questions, explore, compare answers, and reason independently with their base of information, the teachers have created a learning climate that nurtures their students capacity for advancement.
Task:
Write a brief essay (suggested length of 2 pages) in which you do the following:
A. Explain the importance of:
1. Teachers using questioning procedures to probe for learner understanding
2. Teachers probing for learner understanding in order to provide effective feedback to the learners
3. Teachers using follow-up questions
B. Explain why it is important for teachers to create a climate that encourages students to ask further questions and compare opinions, knowledge, and experiences with others.
C. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the attached Rubric Terms.
Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.
Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the General Instructions section.
