For the essay, answer the question – What does it mean to be American?
Your answer must be no longer than 4 pages of type-written, 12-point, double-spaced font, and include the following elements:
a. an exploration of the role of the American West in the formation of American identity
b. reference to at least two readings (Frederick Jackson Turner’s “Significance of the Frontier,” Ch. 6 of Ruiz, Ch. 5 of Richter, or Notes on a Foreign Country) from the second half of the semester. You are allowed (but not required) to reference readings from earlier in the semester to count toward your minimum of two readings.
c. analysis of how your sense of “America” has changed over the course of the semester. How did your perception of America shift? How did it remain the same? Be sure to describe the events, ideas, discussions, lecture elements, or thought processes that contributed to the alteration (or reaffirmation) of your sense of American-ness. Include at least three specific examples to support your explanation.
