Instruction
The final paper will be an opportunity to reflect more deeply on issues raised by the artistic works we studied. This is not a research assignment in which you are summarizing a specific topic. Rather, you are asked to analyze and comment upon a major theme or set of themes present in selected artistic works (film, short story, poetry, etc.). Select a theme or issue that emerged through the course (or one that you want to explore that we did not cover), and analyze how the Israeli and Palestinian literature and film we covered in class engage that theme or issue. Do not summarize the literature and films. Analyze them in terms of what they reflect about a societal and cultural problem, and use the literature and/or film as the basis for discussing how the artist portrays dilemmas, responses, dead ends, new possibilities for the characters and situations presented. Present the major theme or issue upon which you will focus in the thesis paragraph to the paper. Compare and contrast how the theme emerges among artists, considering how their works suggest similar and/or different perspectives. Finally, express your personal opinion and make a sound argument based on your analysis. You may focus on one author or filmmaker or you may compare and contrast selected artists. It is not necessary to consider all the works of the artists you choose to consider, though it is helpful to be familiar with the overall body of work that he/she has constructed. There should be references in the final paper to at least two scholarly articles or book chapters from the syllabus, relevant to your topic of discussion.
Grade for this paper will be out of a total of 100 points. The 100 points will be broken down as follows:
