Here are the four essays on the Exam. Remember, you are only answering two of these and it is your choice. Find the two you can best answer.
1) Contrast the ideas of Thomas Jefferson and those of Alexander Hamilton in the early Republic. How did their visions form the first political parties of the United States?
2) Give a summary of Andrew Jackson's presidency and the events surrounding it. The US Treasury recently decided to remove Andrew Jackson from the front of the $20 bill. In your opinion, should the US Treasury have removed Jackson? Argue your point using historical fact from the textbook. Make sure to fully argue your opinion! Consider the changes of Jacksonian Democracy and the Cherokee Removal.
3) Describe 19th Century slavery in the US South with examples. Was slavery increasing in the US during the 1800s or decreasing? Explain. Finally and in your opinion, what is the main reason Southern States refused to emancipate slaves before the Civil War? For the opinion part of the question, please think about the question in historical terms. Simple answers such as greed or racism are not adequate without proper explanation.
4) Discuss and explain Reconstruction in the US following the Civil War. What laws, amendments, or changes are still part of the US today? Finally and your opinion, how effective was Reconstruction? Did the US government rebuild and reconstruct the United States? There is a lot of information here, so you do not need to explain the history of Reconstruction in great detail (make sure to hit the big points though!). Take your time with the legacy of Reconstruction. Be detailed there.
