Chapter Examples (each worth 25 points for a total of 300 points): Each week we will be discussing various ways to be more successful in our relationships. You are to choose ONE chapter term, idea, or concept from EACH chapter of the book. The purpose of these chapter examples is to focus on a specific example in your life, and not a general statement or something that has happened to someone else. These are about you, and only you. This is the bulk of your course and should be taken seriously. Deadlines are listed under COURSE ACTIVITY. Chapter Examples are due at the beginning of class. Please submit via CANVAS, or bring to class. Do not email me your work. NOTE: Each day this assignment is late, 2 points will be deducted from EACH chapter example. • You will be graded based on content, and typographical and grammatical errors (5 points). • Below is the format to use for your written chapter example (5 points). (Example Chosen) – Chapter 1 1. Text Description: Choose a word, or concept and provide a couple of sentences that define the word and what it means. Use your text, lecture notes and the dictionary to guide you. This should be in a complete sentence (5 points). 2. Personal Example: Be specific with your example. For instance your word is STEREOTYPE ….. I was in Starbucks last week and stood behind a girl who was covered with tattoos and piercings. While I waited, I made up all these assumptions about who she was. When we started talking, I realized that she was nothing like what I imagined ….. You must give more detail about what your assumptions were. This is not to be about someone else, or a situation long ago. Be as recent as possible with your example (5 points). 3. Lessons Learned/ Future Behavior: Provide a statement about what you learned and what you might do next time you are in the situation described above. This section is to put to use what you have learned in this class and from your lecture notes. If you do not provide a specific example, this part of the assignment will be difficult to answer (5 points). Practical Applications (each worth 25 points, for a total of 50 points) During the semester, you should also see how our conversation and topics apply to the world around you. Part of being a proficient communicator is being able to identify positive and negative communication in the media. Some areas to draw from include: Commercials, ads, cartoons, comics, editorials, movies, television, books, speeches, and news stories. Practical Applications are due at the beginning of class. Please bring to class as we will discuss them as a group. Do not email me your work the day it is due. You will be graded based on format (5 points), grammatical, mechanical and typographical errors (5 points) and content (15 points).
