These are pages my professor wants us to include: Born on 4th of July Pg.38 chapter 3 - page 57 * when he played baseball and got his first HR, came home like a hero page 71 * the coaches made him do sit ups and push ups and he was sweating. * Coaches told us, wanting to be first and win was the most important * “ You have to work your bodies if you want to win" * He talks about how shy he was and he wanted to be a hero and earn the varsity letter for his school * Marine = killer, if not a marine = sweet little lady * Talks about going to movies and the guy firing a machine gun at the Germans * They’d go home and reenact movies and shows they watched * When he is actually in combat, he has done it before in his “role-play" * Pg. 211 - the CLIMAX * I remember we all stopped and watched for a moment * Everyone was running all over the place * We started shooting back automatics * All the men ran away from the battle, and Kovic was the only one left shooting into the village * I had been shot, the war had finally caught up to my body. I felt good inside. The war finally caught up with me. * Culture gives us life, even if that means to die

  • The layout is nicely done with plenty of time and detail taken for each aspect of Kovic’s life. The book is a quick read but I enjoyed savoring every word and letting the scenes play out in my imagination. You get to know Kovic as a child with patriotic dreams that blossom early in his mind and heart. Dreams that lead him to join the U.S. Marine Corps and then to the jungles, rice fields and beaches of Vietnam. It’s there where his adult story begins. It may be tough to read for the weak stomach readers out there but Kovic’s descriptions of life, battle, death and pain in Vietnam are very vivid. His use of imagery was so brilliant in my mind’s eye
