HOMEWORK#1
In this essay I want you to draw on everything you have learned from Chapter 5 and in your discussion forum to answer the following question: How does understanding Plate Tectonics help people (including average citizens, city planners, and leaders) plan for natural disasters? The essay should be 3 to 4 paragraphs long, with each paragraph averaging 4 to 5 full sentences. I'm looking for complete, well thought out reflective essays here. Be thorough and descriptive in your essay and be sure to draw on the materials covered in the course directly. For full points, you should not simply write an opinion piece - you must back up your opinions with facts derived from your readings and assignments.
HOMEWORK#2
Adjustment to earthquake hazards in earthquake-prone areas requires early warning. Unfortunately, early warning systems require technology, and technology requires money. This means that wealthier countries are typically much better equipped and prepared than poorer countries. Click on the link below to read a news story about a new early warning system in California, then answer the questions that follow. http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2014/04/24/city-of-long-beach-selected-as-beta-site-to-test-earthquake-early-warning-system/
This is a short essay assignment. All short essays submitted for this course should be written in complete sentences and full paragraphs, each with a coherent beginning, middle, and end. A rule of thumb for short essay lengths is 2-3 full sentences per question.
Using what you've learned about Plate Tectonics and earthquakes, why is it that Long Beach was selected as a testing site for this early warning system? Why don't we have these systems in Indiana? Employ sound scientific reasoning and empirical evidence derived from your textbook and the online lectures in answering these questions.
HOMEWORK#3
This assignment requires you to get outdoors and explore your world! How much time have you taken to examine the rocks and minerals near your dorm, apartment, or house? For this exercise, I want you to do just that - go outside and spend 30 minutes to an hour looking for rocks. Pick the rocks up and examine them. What minerals to you see? What rocks can be found within a few hundred feet of where you live - in your driveway, in your yard, along the road? After completing this exercise and making your identifications, write and submit a short essay (2 to 3 full paragraphs consisting of 4 to 5 sentences each) describing the most common types of rocks (sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous) found near where you live. Do a little internet research to learn something about the local geology and geologic history of your area. Why is it that this type of rock is the most common in your area? At the end of your essay, include a list of all the rocks and minerals you identified while you were outside. If you live in Indiana, the following two links will help you answer the geologic history question: https://igws.indiana.edu/Bedrock/ https://igws.indiana.edu/Surficial/ If you do not live in Indiana, you should be able to find comparable data in an online search. Government agencies in most states and countries publish similar geologic data online. Do your homework and provide a well researched essay!
