Written Communication Summer 2018 Graded Writing 4 – Summary-Response Essay In this essay your task is to demonstrate to the audience, your classmates and I, your ability to read critically by showing a thorough understanding of an author’s main ideas and providing a focused and well-developed response. To that end, choose one article and after determining their main ideas, agree/disagree with the idea(s) which most interest(s) you. Explain and develop your response using both personal experience and at least one (1) outside source. Questions to ask in preparing for this writing assignment include: Which article will I summarize and respond to? How much summary do I need to thoroughly demonstrate my understanding? To what 1-2 main idea(s) do I want to respond? What is my reaction to that/those main idea(s)? Why? What will make my response as credible and effective as possible given the audience? How can outside sources help readers understand my response? What would make my response less effective given the audience? Remember, your audience probably won’t share the specific experiences you’ve had that may explain your reaction, so you’ll have to explain those to us. Strategies for Writing: Think audience. What will your instructor and classmates expect to demonstrate thorough understanding and an effective response to the main ideas of the article? Focus on the author's main ideas, not the events that are used to illustrate or support them, or the author himself/herself. What main ideas are needed in the summary to show thorough understanding? What main idea(s) do you agree/disagree with? How many main ideas can be covered effectively? Develop your response with personal evidence and experience. What examples or personal experiences can help readers understand why you agree/disagree? What details/description will readers need to understand your experiences/examples? How can outside source material be useful in articulating or illustrating my response? Format: Your essay must be typed, double-spaced in a 10-12 point font, and saved as a Word document. Length: About 800 - 1200 words. Generally, people start with a 200-400 word summary, and then transition into a 500-800 word response. These estimates are APPROXIMATE.
