This lab introduces sound recording and mixing tools. We will use software called Audacity. Audacity is a free audio editing program available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. We will use this audio software to record our own voice. Audacity is a digital sound editor. You might think of it as a paint program for audio -- just as a paint program enables you to create images with colors, brush strokes, and a variety of special effects, Audacity enables you to "paint" with sound: tones, pieces of songs and voices and miscellaneous noises, or just pure silence.

  • Lab# 5 Audio Greeting Recording Overview This lab introduces sound recording and mixing tools. Materials • Headset • Audacity (audio editing software)
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:39 PM
  • Part 1: Audio Greeting Recording We will use Audacity to record our own voice greeting message Recording your own Voice Message Before we begin recording, write down what you would like to say. Your greeting should include your full name and introduce yourself briefly. The complete greeting should be between 20-40 seconds long.
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:39 PM
  • 1. Click Start / Programs, select Audacity 2. Plug in your headset. If you have a headset with a microphone, plug the cables into the appropriate connectors on the PC. If you have a headset without a microphone, plug the cable into the connector for the microphone and use the LEFT ear pieces to record your voice (the left ear piece will work as a microphone). 3. Set the operating system audio control to record from your microphone • For Windows system: Find the image of a loudspeaker towards the right-side of the taskbar, right-click on the loudspeaker and select Recording devices to bring up the control window for recording devices. If you can't find it there, you can also select Start/Control Panel/Sound/Recording • Select your microphone (either external or internal), and click on the Properties button. Click the Levels tab in the window and adjust the volume to be in the range 75-100%. • Click Ok twice to close that window. 4. In Audacity, open a new sound window using File/New.
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:40 PM
  • 5. Slide the slider for the input volume (directly below the control buttons) towards the right to be in the 75-100% range. 6. Click on the record button from row of buttons (red button). 7. Start recoding your voice (your greeting). 8. When finished, click on the Stop button (square button). 9. Check your recording, and re-record your greeting if needed (for example, if it is difficult to hear, adjust settings in audacity and record greeting again). The greeting must include your full name. 10. Use the File / Export as WAV option to save your file as voice.wav to your USB stick or hard drive.
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:40 PM
  • Modify your greeting using options in Audacity 1. Repeat your sound file - copy the contents of your greeting to the end of the greeting, so that the greeting will repeat. 2. To do so, select Edit/Select All from the file menu, then select Edit/Copy 3. Move to the end of your sound file, leave a small space at the end of your greeting and select Edit/Paste 4. Repeat one more time. You should now have three identical greetings playing one after the other.
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:41 PM
  • 5. Select the second greeting by using the mouse to highlight the second wave, the timeline on top of the third wave should now be darkened. 6. Select Effect / Change Speed, and set the percent change to anything around 50 (you can either type it or use the slider). This will speed up the greeting. 7. Select the third greeting by using the mouse to highlight the third wave. The timeline on top of the third wave should now be darkened. Experiment with different effects from the File menu under Effects (such as making the speed slower or using an echo). Select an effect of your choice for your third greeting and apply it to the third greeting. 8. Use the File / Export as WAV option to save your file as voice.wav to your USB stick or hard drive and select File/Close to close the greeting file.
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:41 PM
  • Part 2: Audio Greeting Mixing Materials • Headset • Your recorded greeting from the last assignment Audio Greeting Recording • Sound clip or sound effect in .mp3 or .wav format (it is probably easiest to search the web, there is a wealth of sound files on the web and many search engines offer to search by file type). • Audacity (audio editing software)
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:41 PM
  • Procedure The procedure is a three-step process: • Open and edit the sound clip • Import and modify your greeting • Mix both sounds together
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:41 PM
  • 1. Locate a sound clip in .mp3 or .wav format (birds chirping, ocean waves, etc.). 2. Save this sound clip on your flash drive or in the home folder on the computer's hard drive 3. From the Audacity File menu, select File/Open, navigate to the sound and select the sound clip you would like to open 4. You should now see your audio file on the screen 5. Cut out the unwanted part of the sound clip recording. You can select and cut any part of the sound clip recording just like you would select and cut text. Select the part you want to delete, then select edit / delete from the File menu. Sounds, especially high quality sounds have large storage requirements, and it is recommended to keep the total length for this assignment to 20 seconds or less. You may have to work on this process several times to get exactly the part of the sound you would like as the background for your audio greeting. Once you have the file at an acceptable length, do not close the file, keep it open.
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:42 PM
  • 1. From the File menu, select Project / Import Audio 2. Select your audio greeting 3. After completion of the import process, you should now see two audio files on the screen, the 1st audio file containing your voice, the 2nd audio file containing the imported sound (you may have to scroll up/down to see both audio files) 4. Remember that the audio greeting contains three greetings, the regular greeting and two greetings with special effects applied. We need to remove the two greetings with special effects. Select the two greetings to be removed by using the mouse to highlight the two waves (the timeline above the two waves should be darkened). Select Edit / Cut 5. Check the volume of both sounds (your greeting and the sound clip), and adjust the volume level with the + / - slider to the left of each sound if necessary (to make sure that your spoken greeting can be heard over your background sound).
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:42 PM
  • 1. We will now mix our two recordings. We will mix the recordings using the quick mix function. This function will mix both sounds into one sound file. 2. Use Edit / Select / All from the File menu. 3. Use Tracks/Mix and Render. Both files are now mixed, and the voice recording is overlaying the sound clip in the beginning of the file. 4. Select the file by using Edit / Select / All
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:42 PM
  • 5. Use File / Export as WAV to save your audio file as LastName_Greeting_with_Background_Music.wav
    User_15718 | Jun 20, 2018, 18:43 PM
