Instruction
Select an article in a peer review journal relevant to content discussed in Chapter 6 or 7 (Transformative Learning (Mezirow and more)
Experience and Learning.
You may choose an article written by one of the theorists cited in the chapters. Write a critical reflection describing the research study, the methodology, findings, connections with other research and implications for practice.
Read an article in a professional journal addressing participation rates or barriers in adult education. This must be a juried or peer reviewed publication. Describe the purpose of the research, the methodology, the subjects/participants, the findings. Discuss (Analyze). What were the strengths/weaknesses of this approach?
Synthesize (How does this fit with other theories or with other course content?)
What did you learn? What can you apply?
Examples
1. After viewing the film, Educating Rita, you may have questions about the barriers to participation in higher education for working class adults in the United States. You would conduct a search of relevant articles using key words such as working class and higher education in a database such as ERIC or World Cat or Academic Search. You would review possibilities and select one article for your critique. Remember to attach the article.
2. You may have a personal interest in corporate training. What do U.S. companies invest in training? for what purpose? Who participates?
3. You may be interested in adult education courses aimed at increasing the technological fluency of senior citizens. Who participates and what are the outcomes? What are the implications? What are the barriers?
Suggested format for the paper:
Summary of the article (purpose of the study, methodology, findings, recommendation)
Evaluation (analysis)
Synthesis (compare and contrast this study with the research cited in our textbook, discuss in reference to at least 3 studies)
Implications (what are the implications for practitioners or researchers? what are possible applications of the findings? Will you apply this knowledge in your work or your life?)
