You will pick two articles to summarize for this assignment. Each article summary needs to be formatted as follows: 1) Summarize the articles in Microsoft Word. 2) Attach the Microsoft Word Document to the “Extra Credit” discussion forum when you have completed your summaries. You do not need to provide any additional information in the discussion forum other than attaching the Word Document as requested. 3) Do not e-mail the summaries to Micaela or myself. Students should begin describing what the author(s) is/are doing in the study. Is a program being evaluated? Is a criminological theory being tested? In other words, what is the primary purpose (there can be many) of the study? Generally, all of the necessary information for this introductory paragraph can be found in the introduction or theoretical framework (some authors call this a literature review) of the article. 2. Next, students should summarize the findings from the article. What did the authors find? There are several findings from each article, so please be sure to discuss the major findings. 3. What are the implications of the findings? This is usually found within the discussion/conclusion section of an article. In other words, how do the findings relate to what is being examined in the article? For example, researchers find that drug use is related to inmate misconduct. The implication then is that keeping drugs out of prisons can potentially reduce inmate misconducts. Administrators can keep drugs out of the prison by screening visitors and correctional officers. 4. How does the material in the article relate to what we learned in class? Every article connects to what we have already discussed or learned in class. Please connect this material to the class using your textbook. You should cite the textbook by providing me with a chapter and p. #. For example, administrators can reduce the likelihood drugs enter prison by screening and hiring officers who will not engage in boundary violations that jeopardize institutional security (Ch. #, p. #).
