Assignment #1 (Week 3)
Submit Assignment
Due Jul 30 by 2:59am
Points 100
Submitting a text entry box, a website url, a media recording, or a file upload
What social impact do you want to make? What are the issues? You may not know specifically what you want your final action project to be; in order to shape your project, you need to research the literature (articles, books, lectures, etc..) on the history of your issue, the current developments and status, and what interventions/solutions are being proposed for the future. To this end, you will be compiling a review of the literature throughout this course.
For this first assignment, review at least six articles, interviews, videos, etc... that illustrate the history of your issues (use your library). How did the issue manifest? What has been done to impact this social issue? Whom have been the organizations and major players?
Below are two resources to help you organize and navigate constructing a literature review. Please note: These are examples for a full graduate-level literature review, and this assignment is not a full literature review.
1.How to Create a Table for a Literature Review Summary
2.How to Use a Literature Review Matrix
Mechanics: This assignment is to be submitted as an academic essay with appropriate references and in-text citations. Give your paper a title, a brief introduction, and a conclusion. Adhere to Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) guidelines for all references and citations. Limit it to 1,500-2,000 words (6-8 pages) typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font, 1" margins. Use the spell check and grammar check tools in Word or consult the Writing Center for editing help. This assignment is worth 15% of the course grade.
Please refer to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (Purdue OWL) Sample Paper if you are unfamiliar with CMS format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/717/11 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Due: Sunday by 11:59 pm (PST).
Additional tips:
•You are encouraged to use blog posts, magazine articles, podcasts, etc. as long as they are substantive and somewhat scholarly. For example, a blog post that is merely anecdotal would not be appropriate, but a blog that cites verifiable statistics or quotes from practitioners or experts would be excellent.
•There are good magazines / online journals that have likely addressed your topic in some way. SSIR (Stanford Social Innovation Review) is an excellent place to start.
•We use a lot of terms like changemaker, social entrepreneur, and social innovator that are not as well established as the non-profit sector. So you may find more information by searching on more generic terms like non-profit or international development, even if you intend to address your issue through a social enterprise or some other model.
•You can also include sources that talk not only about the issue itself but also about other aspects of your solution. For example, if you intend to address a social issue by creating a public awareness campaign, you can also include sources that talk about creating public awareness campaigns even if they do so in the context of addressing different social issues than the one you are going to focus on.
•Personal interviews are also acceptable and useful sources. You may want to interview a potential beneficiary about the pros and cons of services they have received in the past, as well as leaders of organizations addressing your social issue or related social issues.
